What is a Mobile Site and why is it important?

What exactly is a mobile site?

A mobile site is one which has been designed specifically for viewing on a mobile web, or WAP browser. There are number of key differences between a mobile site and a 'regular' site, discussed in the following section, but it's sufficient to say that a mobile site viewed on a regular browser (or vice versa) is usually a very poor browsing experience indeed. Both user-groups (mobile and regular browsers) have very different needs and so it is imperative that these needs be catered for in a mobile Web site design.

So why all the fuss?

Industry figures put the annual sales of mobile phones at well in excess of one billion units. That's every year, year-in, year-out. Add that incredible statistic to the fact that over 25% of mobile phone users reportedly access the Internet using their mobile phone and you will quickly realize the massive market that there is for mobile web content already.

And it's growing. Fast.

There is increasing speculation, both in the Internet and telecommunications worlds alike, that 'mobile web' is going to be the 'next big platform' for the Internet in the coming years and so Web site operators must ignore this already-huge-and-growing marketplace at their peril!

This is of course one of the reasons why the big players are taking this space so very seriously. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are all making great efforts to promote mobile web services and advertising to businesses and end-users alike - it's an inevitability that at some point this will be a huge part of all our lives.
